Name: Bruno
Breed: American Pit bull Terrier
Age: 2 years
Size: Medium
Adoption Donation: $135
Other:Neutered male, vaccinations current
Bruno was hit by a car, picked up by animal control, and brought to the pound in Mankato, MN. The clinic staff soon learned that he had atrophy in his left front leg from an old injury and cannot use that leg. It may need to be amputated in the future. (Update: Bruno's left front leg was amputated on August 3rd) . His right back leg took the brunt of the car accident and needed a pin to hold his hip in place.
Most dogs in this situation with no known owner would be put to sleep but Bruno won over the hearts of the clinic staff. They made numerous calls to different rescues to see if anyone would accept him. This is how he ended up with us! After the needed surgery on his hip, he made transport from Mankato to Fargo. Bruno touched everyone's heart that he met along the way.
Bruno had been adopted but after a few months returned to our rescue. The new adoptive family reported that Bruno was having house-breaking issues and they were unable to work through them. His foster home has never had these issues. We are speculating that Bruno has become very dependent on his foster Mom and is stressed and anxious when not with her. Bruno's foster Mom has been with him through some very tramatic times so he probably has become very dependent of her. We suspect he is having housebreaking issues due to anxiety and stress. Bruno's foster Mom has seriously considered adopting him but, having two dogs of her own, and being a single doggy-parent, she just doesn't believe that she can take on a 3rd dog for it's lifetime. It breaks her heart but she thought it would be best to try to find Bruno another adoptive home.
November 18th - Bruno has been great since coming
back from his trial home, it's been awhile since any feedback was posted,
but he did have his front leg amputated early August and has been better
than ever. Bruno would like to send out big sloppy kisses to all that
donated for his surgeries and vet care. He loves to roll around in the
grass, rough house with his foster siblings, and relax on the couch. I
do believe that since he had issues in his trial home that he will need
a home where he can be with his person a majority of the time. I bring
him to work with me and he usually goes out visiting to friends/family's
houses, so this is what he is used to. He does have free roam when I do
leave him behind and he does well. Bruno's never met anyone he doesn't
like, furry friends included, and welcomes everyone with his helicopter
tail when visiting. Bruno's an easy dog to care for, however, it will
take a special person/family to help him get through the transition of
leaving. His previous trial home tried many different trainers tips to
help him get over his worries without success, so you would need to know
that it may take time, and lots of patience. Believe me, Bruno is well
worth it :)
June 30th - Bruno has been going to hydrotherapy,
strictly, 3 times a week since the pool is now in Fargo! He loves it...
No, not really, I wish I could say that but unfortunately it's a lot of
work for a 3-legged dog to swim, and he's not too fond of it :) However
he still walks(or runs) into the building tail wagging, happy to be there,
that's just Bruno...he's happy! He recently got a fenced in yard to play
in with his foster siblings and after the dogs do a few circles chasing
each other around Bruno is usually either laying out sun bathing, or eating
grass. He is about ready to say goodbye to his lame front leg and is hoping
that the nice people who support 4 Luv of Dog Rescue will help him pay
for that :) He wanted to have a kissing booth at the next adoption days
to help raise money....but let's face it, you wouldn't have to give him
a dollar, Bruno gives them away for free. We have been missing the adoption
days lately because he has hydrotherapy scheduled on Thursdays during
the events, but Bruno hopes to be out to see everybody soon!
May 7th Update - Bruno is doing great! Since starting his hydrotherapy and at home therapy he is no longer scooting on the ground at all. He gets up and walks everywhere he goes whether it's to move 1 foot or a mile! He hops up and down the stairs no problem and can even shimmy up onto the couch all by himself. Bruno no longer has problems with linoleum and laminate flooring :) We go to the dog park many times a week and everyone loves him. A couple days ago a boy, probably 8 -10 years old, was sitting with him and said "Bruno, you should have a collar that says 'World's Greatest Dog'". Ahhhh :) Everyone asks about him and are appalled that someone could just leave such a sweet boy behind, some even remember him from his front page spread in the Forum. He continues to dazzle many people who don't particularly care for the pit bull breed (I'm guessing because they've never actually met one) and changes their mind with his gentle demeanor that so many pits posses.
March 25th Update - Bruno is coming leaps and bounds! He is walking well on his own on anything other than linoleum and laminate flooring...they can be a bit tricky. Bruno has attempted steps a few times and hasn't fallen (he actually did quite well) but is still leery of them. He has an appointment on Monday to see the vet to make sure his back leg is where it should be *crossing fingers*. If all goes well he just needs to continue what he's doing to build up the muscle in his back leg!
March 13th Update - Bruno's progress hasn't changed much since my last update, but he will be going in to get an x-ray on his back leg to make sure his hip is still in place. When I talked last to the vet tech that took care of Bruno in Mankato she said that since his surgery was so long and complicated the Veterinarian that did the surgery was worried that his hip had possibly popped back out of place since he's not using it. I don't believe that he would ever "complain" about his hip bothering him, and he would happily continue to just live with a dislocated hip so Bruno will be going in so we can see for ourselves what's going on.He still gets around well on his 2 right legs when he's outside, but not much movement inside.
Bruno would like to thank the person who donated the HUGE bed at the adoption days last weekend, he LOVES it!! We're planning on going to a doggy party this weekend so hopefully I'll have some fun new pics for his page on Monday! (See picture tab #6)
February 27th Update - Bruno is taking his time learning how to walk. He is walking, but just on his 2 right legs if you can believe that! He will get up for short spurts when he has motivation like getting to other dogs or getting to me, but he will only do this while we are at work or at home when we are outside and he is ready to get out of the cold. I did see him put a little pressure on his left back leg yesterday when we were outside, he was trying to keep up with me cleaning up the kennels, but this was the first and last I have seen it, normally he will fall over rather than bracing himself with his left back leg. He remains happy and is always wagging his tail, I still have hope (especially after yesterday) that he will learn to walk on his own, but it is going to take longer than initially expected.
February 11th Update - Since having Bruno in my home he has proved that he is one of the greatest dogs ever. His tail never stops wagging even though you know he is in pain. He loves dogs, cats, and has even met and liked my ferret! Right now he "scoots" across the floor, pulling himself with his front left leg and pushing with his back legs. He does have a long road of therapy and recovery ahead of him, and he has proven to be quite stubborn about it as he doesn't mind being carried, but he is starting to try to get up on his own when my sisters dog stops by to see him (she's lots of fun) he just needs help staying up :) We do therapy in short sessions throughout the day with LOTS of praise and cookies during them to keep him motivated. Did I mention he's potty trained? I'm sure everyone is wondering how that works, well I just take him outside and set him on the ground and he positions himself accordingly. He is absolutely a WONDERFUL dog with the best personality and although he's more work than most dogs, someday he will be able to get around on his own and prove to everyone that helped with his rescue that he was absolutely worth it.
Bruno and his foster sibling, Dakota.
